SI Music Festival

The 2026 Southern Illinois Music Festival celebrates our nation’s semi‑quincentennial as part of America at 250, featuring classical music performances by American composers spanning three centuries.

Exploring the Declaration of Independence
May 2, 2026

Join us for an engaging community conversation that goes beyond a history lesson to celebrate the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. Together, we’ll explore the document’s words, the events and motivations that led to separation from Great Britain, and how its principles continue to shape our lives today.

The program will include an open, participant-driven discussion—an opportunity to connect, reflect, and engage with the values at the heart of our democracy.

American Revolution Experience
May 6 - 16, 2026

Powerful storytelling, vivid illustrations, and first hand accounts from the people who lived the Revolution, created by the American Battlefield Trust and the Daughters of the American Revolution, this national traveling exhibit brings the story of America's founding to life. Presented in partnership with the Jesse Gordon Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

General John A. Logan Museum Memorial Day Ice Cream Social
May 25, 2026

The birthplace of John A Logan, the founder of Memorial Day, is the fitting location of a special Memorial Day celebration at 1613 Edith St., Murphysboro. At 1pm the Murphysboro High School band will start the event followed by the words of General John A Logan as portrayed by Brian Fox Ellis who will also mingle with visitors as they enjoy homemade ice cream. The museum will also be open so visitors may review a special Civil War exhibit. The event runs until 4pm.

Grand Celebration Weekend
June 5 - 7, 2026

Spend the weekend immersed in history in Murphysboro! On Friday, June 5 at 5:30 p.m., enjoy an SIU Cricket Club exhibition match at Riverside Park followed by hands-on instruction—families welcome. The celebration continues Saturday with a historic parade at 1 p.m., demonstrations, speakers, and reenactor camps, and concludes Sunday at 2 p.m. with author Gary Ecelbarger and entertainment at the Liberty Theater.

The Influence of Migration & The Question of Slavery in the Formation of the State of Illinois
June 6, 2026

Historian and Author Mark Motsinger will present his research on how Revolutionary War land grants to soldiers influenced the history & culture of Southern Illinois. We'll also review the "Declaration of Sentiment" from the Colored Convention held in Alton, IL in 1856 and how it influenced the question of slavery and Black Codes in Illinois.

Lives in Code: Stories of African American Resilience Under the Illinois Black COdes 1819-1865

This presentation examines the history and impact of the Illinois Black Codes from 1819 to 1865, highlighting how restrictive laws shaped the lives of enslaved people, indentured servants, and free Black residents in a so-called free state. Featuring historian Caroline Kisiel, the program shares stories of resilience and resistance that helped transform Illinois history, offering important context and insight into this often-overlooked chapter of the past.

Learning in Retirement Celebrates the 250th Anniversary of the USA
June 17, 2026

As part of the America at 250 celebration, Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement (SILIR) will host presentations by Dr. Frederick Betz and Krista Chmiel on June 17. Betz will explore the history and significance of the Pledge of Allegiance and its connection to immigration and American ideals, while Chmiel will examine the stories behind four iconic patriotic songs—The Star-Spangled Banner, God Bless America, America, and Illinois—with a musical performance to conclude the program. The free event begins at 10:30 a.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Carbondale, with a coffee and social hour starting at 9:30 a.m.

Puppies & Yoga for a Purpose

As we celebrate National PTSD Awareness Day and prepare for America’s 250th Birthday, take time to refresh, recharge, and give back to those who have served our country. Join us for a morning of stretching, smiles, and puppy cuddles—all while supporting an incredible cause.

This special fundraiser helps provide life-changing service dogs to veterans living with PTSD.

CarbonRail: Celebrating Carbondale's Role in American History
June 27, 2026

CarbonRail: Celebrating Carbondale’s Role in American History will take place on June 27, 2026, from 3:30–7:30 PM at the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station (SIMMS) and The Varsity. The event commemorates the first train’s arrival in Carbondale in 1854 and America’s 250th with a proclamation, live music, silent film screenings, and a world premiere play depicting the historic arrival. Attendees can move between locations to enjoy programming throughout the evening, including multiple performances of the play and ongoing film screenings.

Carbondale 2126 Time Capsule Celebration
July 2, 2026

The Carbondale 2126 Time Capsule Celebration will take place on July 2, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station (SIMMS). The event marks America’s 250th and the completion of SIMMS with the burial of a 100-year time capsule filled with items representing life in Carbondale in 2026. Community members are invited to attend as the capsule is placed beneath the flagpole, to be opened in 2126 for future generations to reflect on the city’s history and evolution.

July 4 Fireworks Display and Orchestra Performance
July 4, 2026

Celebrate America at 250 with an evening of live music and fireworks on the SIU campus.

  • 7:45 p.m. – Southern Illinois Music Festival performance, Great American Patriotic Music (Lot 18, near Banterra Center)
  • 9:15 p.m. – Fireworks display

Parking and Arrival
Plan to arrive early - main parking lots often fill and close by 9 p.m.

  • Recommended parking: Lots 18 and 56 (Banterra Center)
  • Overflow parking: Lot 89 (north of Banterra Center)

Food Vendors
Enjoy food and treats while you wait for the fireworks, including Pelzer’s Tropical Sno, American Ice Cream, and HoneyBeez Snowballz.

Road Closures and Restrictions
Road closures will start at 6 p.m., including parking lots 37 and 52. Cars must be cleared from these areas by 6 p.m. Douglas Drive and Saluki Drive will be closed from Evergreen to Lincoln, and from Douglas to Arena Drive, until after the fireworks display. Parking along Route 51 or other roadways for viewing purposes is prohibited.

In the event of rain, the fireworks display will be postponed to Sunday, July 5, at 9:15 p.m.

As we approach the 250th Anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, we’ll take a look at what this document means in our daily lives. How we choose to honor and remember this living document helps shape whether, and how, our history stays alive and relevant in our everyday lives. In this session, we’ll look at the different ways Illinoisians have marked the milestones of our Nation’s founding over the past 250 years and what influenced those choices. Then we’ll look to today: What artifacts, moments, and experiences would you curate to capture who we are and help future Americans understand this important anniversary?

How Southern Illinois is Becoming a News Desert and Why it Matters

This program explores the growing challenge of “news deserts” in Southern Illinois and their impact on local communities, featuring perspectives from journalism professionals and educators. Through discussion and regional examples, this event highlights both the decline in local news coverage and the important work being done to sustain informed communities, alongside a related exhibit showcasing community storytelling through student photojournalism.
